Description:

Manufactured by Theophilus Richards (1747-1828). "The Concise History of Birmingham" from 1808 noted, “The shop of Theophilus Richards, in the High Street, is the toyshop of Birmingham; for the elegance of its appearance and the multiplicity of its valuable articles it is scarcely rivalled,” and the shop was known for its silver goods. The multi-stage barrel has Birmingham private proofs on the upper left and flares at the muzzle. The rounded lock has floral engraving on the plate and cock, with "T/RICHARDS" marked at the center of the plate. The iron breech plug tang is floral engraved and has a sighting groove. The remaining furniture is brass with light engraving including a blank thumb plate and a floral finial on the trigger guard. The near full-length stock is mostly smooth with relief cut shell-shaped molding around the breech plug tang, and the ramrod is tipped with brass. The bore is estimated at 10 gauge and flares to approximately 1 1/2 inches at the muzzle.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the barrel and other brass components mostly bright with an attractive lightly aged patina and a mostly smooth grey patina on the iron with some light flash pitting. The nose cap/band is absent. The stock is fine with some minor cracks, filler, and repair in the forestock and otherwise scattered minor dings. Mechanically excellent.
