Description:

Samuel Brunn was among the most accomplished English gun and sword makers in the United Kingdom at the end of the flintlock era in the late 18th century and the early 19th century and was a gunmaker to the Prince of Wales (later King George IV). These .69 caliber (14 bore) officer's pistols from c. 1805-1820 feature over/under smoothbore barrels of Damascus with London proofs on the right, a gold blade front sight, gold vent liners, and gold inlaid banner on the breech end of the upper barrel inscribed "S BRUNN/56 CHARg CROSS LONDON" along with a gold inlaid band. The locks have gold inlaid classical martial designs and "S-BRUNN" at the centers, foliate engraving, and sliding half-cock safeties. The pistols have double triggers, blued trigger guards with engraved borders and martial trophies, and checkered "saw-handle" grips with inlaid silver pommel trim and silver inlaid pommel escutcheons inscribed with a coat of arms showing a crowned demi-eagle over a torse. A note inside the case indicates this is the crest of the Wingfield family, Viscounts Powerscourt. Richard Wingfield, 5th Viscount Powerscourt (1790-1823) was an Anglo-Irish representative peer who lived at the family's large Powerscourt Estate, in County Wicklow, Ireland, and hosted King George IV in 1821. The pair comes in a fitted hardwood case with a Samuel Nock trade label inside the lid, green baize lining, and several accessories.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of the re-browned finish and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrels, bright original gold inlays, original case colors in the protected areas, 75% plus original blue finish, attractive aged patina on the silver, and generally minor age and storage related wear. The stock is also very fine with crisp checkering and minor marks. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are very good with minor storage wear.
