Elaborate Gold Inlaid Manceaux of Paris Smoothbore Flintlock Sporting Gun with Gilt Furniture

Francois Jules Manceaux was a celebrated arms maker in 19th century and held several patents for arms improvements and was also the head of the royal arms factory in Tulle. He produced the sword that is part of the crown jewels of Greece in the 1830s as well as a gold decorated pair of pistols that were made for presentation to Captain Thomas, Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, by King Louis Philippe of France in 1843 that were sold by Rock Island Auction Company in 2020. Many of Manceaux's ornate arms appear to have been destined for the Ottoman and North African market and reflect that region's tastes. This mid-19th century flintlock sporting gun has a blade front sight on the rear of the upper barrel band, a notch rear sight at the breech, gold inlaid scrollwork on the breech section, gold vent and pan liners "MANCEAUX A PARIS" in gold on the lock along with scrollwork, and highly elaborate gilt furniture with detailed foliate and scroll detailing. A hallmark and maker's mark are on the trigger guard tang.

ConditionVery fine with bright original gold inlays and gilt furniture, 75% plus original blue and casehardened finish, some oxidation mainly towards the muzzle, crack in the trigger guard, and generally light age and storage related wear. The stock is fine and has mild scratches and dings and faint repaired cracks in the wrist. Mechanically excellent.
