Description:

These were manufactured in the late 1930s as a streamlined version of the Model 1917 rifle designed to compete against the Winchester Model 70 rifle. Approximately 2,500 were produced in total, and the majority of these were obtained by the U.S. Government in 1942 as war expedient rifles. They were never issued, and instead were retained after WWII and eventually given to the Navy. In the 1960s/70s the Navy decided to start issuing them as presentation trophy awards for the top rifle shooters in the Navy and USMC. This rifle has not been marked as awarded on the floor plate. The rifle has a 24 inch sport weight barrel with a ramp front base and a buckhorn type adjustable rear sight. The barrel is marked with the two-line Remington factory address and with "SPRINGFIELD/30 CAL.1906" on the left side in front of the receiver. The right side of the receiver is marked with "REMINGTON," and "MODEL-720/41107" is on the left side. It is fitted with its original Remington matching factory bolt correctly stamped on the underside with serial number "41107". It has an American walnut stock with hand cut checkered panels on the sides of the pistol grip and forend, a set of factory sling swivels and a checkered steel buttplate. The left side of the stock is correctly stamped with a "Cross-Cannon" Ordnance cartouche followed by an unboxed "FJA" inspector's proof.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 97% plus original blue finish, some light handling marks, minor oil staining, and a couple minor spots/pits. Wood is very fine with scattered dings and scratches, and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
