Description:

Manufactured circa early to mid-1943 after the month of February, when Winchester stopped adding date stamps to barrels. Features winged blade front and "S" marked two position flip-up rear sights, undated Winchester "W" marked barrel with "ordnance bomb" on the gas cylinder, Type I detachable action spring tube, Type I barrel band, "W" marked milled trigger housing, checkered push button safety, "W" marked Type II magazine catch, unmarked Type I slotted hammer, "W" Type I slide, and "W" blued flat top bolt. Fitted an oiled walnut high-wood stock with "W.R.A./G.H.D" "crossed cannons" cartouches along with "WALTER" carved into the left with "J.W." and "GF.P." on the right, topped off with an "IO" marked four rivet replacement handguard. While not authorized by the U.S. military, it wasn't uncommon for servicemen to carve symbols, messages, or names and initials (as in this case) into the stocks of their issued carbines.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retaining 30% faded thin original parkerized finish on the balance with extensive scattered light freckling/spotting, minor pitting, edge wear, brown patina, and general handling wear expected from wartime use exposed to the elements. The stock is good with small cracks and the rear trigger guard tang and high cut slide section, scattered minor handling marks, crisp cartouches, and well defined period carvings. Mechanically excellent. A fine historic representation of a World War II veteran M1 Carbine with personalized character added by the men who where there.
