Description:

This fine English double barrel shotgun was manufactured in 1880 and features browned Damascus barrels with a bead front sight on the concave rib which is signed "SCOTT'S PATENT TRIPLEX LEVER GRIP. W. & C. SCOTT The Premier Quality [tower logo] 10. GT CASTLE STREET REGENT CIRCUS LONDON MADE FOR J. ADLER ELLIS, CHICAGO, 1880." The underside of the barrels has the serial number, "CHOKE", and London "NOT FOR BALL" black powder proof marks. The top lever hammer action with double underbolt and lever grip in the doll's head extension is marked on the watertable with London view marks and maker's and patent details. The rebounding side locks are signed "W. & C. SCOTT & SON". "No 26467" is inscribed on the trigger guard tang. There is tight English scroll engraving throughout. The checkered forearm has a button release, and the well-figured pistol grip buttstock has a dark horn cap, blank gold wrist escutcheon, wood extension, and Silver's recoil pad. The leather takedown case has "J. ADLER ELLIS/CHICAGO" on the lid escutcheon and was modified to fit the longer stock. Norman R. Blank purchased this fine gun from the Brotcke Gun Shop in Van Nuys, California, in 1959. They had purchased it from the son of J. Adler Ellis. The latter was a vice president and president of the National Life Insurance Company prior to leaving in 1881 to enter in the commission business, including becoming a partner with Milton C. Lightner in Ellis & Lightner, commission merchants at 170 Washington Street in Chicago, until 1883. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at "10" (.775 inches) and measure .782 inches; choke constriction .020/.021 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 1 13/16 inch drop at heel; 15 1/4 inch length of pull; cast-on; weight 10 lbs. 14 oz. Provenance: The J. Adler Ellis Collection; The Norman R. Blank Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus original brown and distinct patterns along the barrel, 90% plus original case colors with fading mainly on the trigger guard, crisp markings and engraving throughout, and generally fairly minor wear. Both hammers are repaired. The wood is fine with crisp checkering showing a few marks, a chip on the right edge of the original factory forearm, and lengthened and refinished buttstock. Mechanically excellent.
