Description:

The Model 1895 was the first non-detachable box magazine rifle offered by Winchester. This particular Model 1895 was 1 of 10,000 muskets ordered by the United States Army for use in the Spanish-American War. When the ordnance board went to the Winchester factory to inspect the muskets a large number were rejected for unsubstantial reasons. After much debate the 10,000 muskets passed the inspection and in 1899 100 were shipped to the Philippines and issued to the 33rd Volunteer Infantry Regiment for field testing. After an unfavorable report the guns were returned to the United States and sold to a New York dealer who shipped the remaining 9,900 muskets to Cuba, many of which eventually ended up in Mexico in the service of Pancho Villa's revolutionaries, fighting against the same government that had originally ordered them. The top of the receiver ring is marked "US". The standard three-line address and patent dates are marked on the left of the receiver and the two-line trademark and model marking are on the upper tang. The serial number is marked on the lower tang and "K.S.M." is marked on the left of the lever and hammer. It is fitted with a pinned and ramped blade front sight, military pattern folding ladder rear sight, and sling swivels on the barrel band and bottom of the stock. It is mounted with a full length, musket-pattern forearm with upper handguard and a straight grip stock with a trapdoor military pattern buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Rating Definition:

Good, retains faint traces of the original blue finish with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered light pitting. The refinished wood is fair with numerous scattered dents and scratches. The mainspring is slightly weak, otherwise mechanically fine.
