Manufactured in 1896, this is an example of an early production, special order Winchester Model 1894. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .38-55 caliber with an octagon barrel and plain trigger, a plain pistol grip stock, and in takedown configuration when received at the warehouse on 2 March 1896 and shipped the next day in order number 6783. In many ways, these "standard grade" pistol grip rifles are less common than deluxe rifles with pistol grips, as often a person splashing the extra cash for a pistol grip would also order the deluxe checkered wood. Out of the first 353,999 Model 1894s produced, only 13,703 were ordered with pistol grips, many of which had checkered wood, making examples like this quite scarce. The barrel has the standard two-line address and caliber marking at the breech. The three-line model and trademark information is on the upper tang, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The stock was not removed for assembly number inspection (screw slightly marred and tight). It is fitted with a set of "sporting sights", including a German silver blade front and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and a crescent buttplate. Provenance: The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection

Good, with traces of the original blue finish, mostly on the magazine, with the balance mostly a grey or brown patina, and a few scattered patches of light spotting. The very lightly sanded and revarnished wood is also fine good with scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A rare, non-deluxe, pistol gripped Winchester Model 1894 rifle!
