Description:

This design is essentially an improvement on Cochran's 1837 patent. The Daniel brothers' U.S. patent #677, issued on April 5, 1839, covers the design which features an essentially octagonal turret with a protruding mouth on each chamber that fit into the rear of the barrel and a lever under the action that moves the cylinder forward into engagement to create a better gas seal. Flayderman estimates that perhaps as many as fifty of these were made, but there may be far fewer. The only other example we have sold was #9 many years ago. The rifle has "H. & C. DANIELS/PATENT/CHESTER/CONN" marked at the front of the top strap and "eagle/C. B. ALLEN/SPRINGFIELD/MASS." at the rear. The matching serial number "12" is marked on various components. The rifle has a dovetailed blade front sight and a screw adjustable dovetailed sporting rear sight. Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with dark brown patina, mild pitting, loose trigger guard, some slivers absent from the edges of the forearm, a chip at the toe on the otherwise fine stock, and moderate wear overall. Mechanically fine.
