Description:

Starr Arms Co. manufactured approximately 20,601 of these carbines during the Civil War, with the strong majority seeing hard use, unlike this highly attractive example which somehow appears to have seen very little if any use at all. Features standard blade front and two-leaf rear sights, sling ring mounted on the left of the receiver, small inspection initials "H.G.S" on the left of the breech and on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang, and two bordered script "STB" (Samuel T. Bugbee) inspection cartouches stamped on the left wrist of the stock. Numbered "18562" on the right of the breech block wedge and "20358" on the underside of the barrel. Due to its high state of condition, it appears that this carbine was likely factory assembled this way with these two differing numbers. Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retains 97% original blue finish with some minor flaking on the bottom breech cover, 90% vivid original case colors, with a few patches of dark freckling/oxidation visible on the rear top tang, and absolutely sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. The wood is also excellent with distinct edges, a few scattered minor dents and scratches, legible cartouches, and rich oil finish. Mechanically excellent. This high condition Starr carbine would make a superior addition to any Civil War arms collection!
