Description:

Styled directly after the French Model 1763/66 Charleville pattern, this is one of 20,000 muskets made by approximately 18 different contractors for Pennsylvania state militia issue, authorized by the Legislative Act of 1797. This particular musket is one of the 4,000 manufactured by John Miles of North Liberties, Philadelphia (two contracts of 2,000 each, 1798 and 1801). "MILES/PHILADA/CP" marked at the rear of the lock, the "CP" denoting ownership by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The breech of the barrel is stamped with a "V" above a sunken oval proof and "CP", and the barrel tang is numbered "152". "IB" and a stock maker's marking stamped on the left stock flat. Bayonet lug on bottom of barrel towards the muzzle, and a brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivels mounted beneath the middle barrel band and ahead of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with mottled brown and gray patina on the iron surfaces, some scattered patches of light pitting, and defined markings. Stock is fine with defined edges, scattered dents and scratches, some minor chips at the edges, a few cracks visible on both sides ahead of the buttplate, and mostly legible stamps. Mechanically fine.
