John Cuff of London is identified by Blackmore as a goldsmith, jeweler, and firearms dealer in 1818-1827 and as active at the 106 Regent Street address on the case trade label in 1825-27. The smoothbore Damascus barrels have post front sights, swivel mounted ramrods, and casehardened patent breeches with platinum lined "JOHN/CUFF/LONDON" maker's marks, platinum lined vents, and gold bands. The advanced flintlocks have rainproof priming pans, frizzen spring rollers, sliding half-cock safeties, and "JOHN CUFF" towards the center. The blued iron spurred trigger guards and pommel caps are engraved. The wedge and wrist escutcheons are silver. The pommel caps are dark horn. The half-length stocks have checkered wrists. The case has the original John Cuff trade label inside the lid, loading and cleaning rod, three-way combination flask, ball mold, additional pair of jaw screws, and flints.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a blend of original finish and dark brown patina, distinct Damascus patterns, and minor pitting at the breech. The breech plug, standing breech, and lock have 40% original casehardened finish and smooth gray patina. The mounts have 60% original blue finish, gray and brown patina, and minor oxidation. The silver has dark aged patina. The stock is also fine and has crisp checkering, minor scrapes and dings, small cracks, and a small chip at the toe. Mechanically excellent. The case is good and has moderate age and storage related wear, some chips and cracks, and replacement hinges (originals in the case). The flask has a broken spring; otherwise, the accessories have mild age and storage related wear.
