Description:

Boss & Co. build some of the finest guns in the world with this gun being a shining example of the quality of work one can expect from the company and is the embodiment of Donald Dallas' book "Boss & Co.: Builders of Best Guns Only". The gun is built with blued steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single brass bead sight on the flat matted solid rib, "BOSS & Co. 41. ALBEMABLE STREET. PICCADILLY. LONDON. W." and "MADE IN ENGLAND" engraved on the right and left tubes respectively, a single band of engraving at the breech, 2 3/4" chambers with automatic ejectors, and correct period proof marks on the flats. The barrels are fitted to a highly attractive self-opening sidelock action which displays classic bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding "BOSS & Co." signatures on either lockplate before continuing on the toplever, triggerguard, and both of the tangs. The gun features bushed firing pins, double triggers, a right hand rolled triggerguard, gold centerlined cocking indicators on either lockplate, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and an Anson button release as well as a straight grip stock with tear drop carved drop points, blank gold inscription oval, and a checkered bare butt. Included is a 1990 dated letter from Boss & Co. confirming the current configuration of 20 gauge, 26 inch barrels, 2 3/4 inch chambers, chokes, matted rib, stock length, and weight when it was ordered by Abercrombie & Fitch of New York on May 23rd, 1938, and shipped via the Queen Mary on October 29 of the same year. Abercrombie & Fitch was once one of America's largest suppliers of sporting goods and had a long track record of working with the finest producers in the industry. Also included is an oak and leather takedown case with nickel snap caps, nickel oiler, and cleaning tools. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at "20" (.615 inches) and measured .618/.618 inches; choke constriction .005/.011 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.028 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 7/16 inch drop at heel; 14 9/16 inch length of pull; weight 5 lbs. 9 oz.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall as professionally refurbished, retaining 98% blue finish on the barrels with some thinning at the muzzle, 60% original case colors with the balance a fine silver patina, and some loss of blue on the lower tang. The metal shows minor handling evidence and the wood has a few scratches, a chip at the left front of the forend, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good. A fine opportunity to own a lovely subgauge gun from one of England's best makers!
