Description:

This is a scarce example of a factory engraved Colt Officers Model DA Target revolver. The included factory letter confirms the revolver's configuration including .38 caliber, 5 inch barrel, blue finish, pearl grips, and "level 2" engraving, and states it was shipped to: Loan Account, Von Lengerke and Antoine, Chicago, Illinois, on March 30, 1928, in order #14271/1. It was a single item shipment. Extra remarks on the letter state this revolver was subsequently purchased by Von Lengerke and Antoine on June 27, 1928. The revolver has Colt factory Grade B engraving and pearl grips with Colt medallions. The engraving appears to be identical to Colt Officers Model Target Revolver sn. 538042 engraved by Wilbur A. Glahn in 1928 that is shown on page 411 of "Colt Engraving" R. L. Wilson. The revolver has a flat top strap fitted with an adjustable target rear sight. The scarce 5 inch barrel has an adjustable target front sight. The trigger, hammer, and back strap have fine hand checkering. The top of the barrel is marked with the Colt Hartford address and "1884", "1905", and "1926" patent dates in two lines. The model designation: "+ OFFICERS MODEL 38+" is located on the left side of the barrel. The Rampant Colt trademark is located in a relief-carved circle on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder latch. The Colt "VP/Triangle" proof is located on the left side of the frame over the front trigger guard bow, and the assembler's number "3" is located over the rear trigger guard bow. "7" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel in front of the frame. The serial number is located on the inside of the frame well and on the cylinder crane. The revolver is extensively engraved with deeply cut scroll designs on a punch-dot background by Colt Master Engraver Wilbur A. Glahn. Glahn engraved Colt firearms from about 1919 to 1950 and is one of the acknowledged 20th century master engravers. Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains at 90% plus of the original blue finish. Most of the finish wear is limited to the front grip strap and muzzle. The flawlessly executed Germanic scroll engraving is deep and sharp. Markings are clear. The pearl grips are excellent. Mechanically excellent. An outstanding example of Colt Officers Model Target Revolver with factory Grade B engraving by one of the 20th century master engravers.
