Description:

Manufactured in 1920, this is a very good example of a Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle in "lightweight" configuration. The included factory letter only lists that the rifle shipped on 12 August 1920 in order number 94262, however, it is clear that this rifle is in the original configuration that it left the factory in. Being a "lightweight" rifle, it is certainly in an interesting configuration, having a few special order features which were standard on other Model 1886 production, but were not standard on the .33 W.C.F. and .45-70 W.C.F. lightweight rifles. The three main features are the full-length magazine, straight grip stock, and the crescent buttplate, all of which were considered fairly standard on other Model 1886s, but were special ordered on a lightweight rifle. It has the standard Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper left of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, nickel steel marking, and caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model and trademark information, while the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a set of sights which were almost certainly special ordered from the factory, including a raised/ramped Lyman beaded blade front sight, folding two-leaf rear sight, and a Lyman peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a very nicely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. This rifle is pictured on p. 341 of "The Winchester Book" by Madis, where its interesting configuration is briefly described. Provenance: The Collection of John Wallace, The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 70% of the original blue finish with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina, primarily on the lever, takedown collar, and front bottom of the receiver. The wood is also fine with a few scattered minor handling marks and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An interesting configuration for a Winchester Model 1886 lightweight rifle!
