Description:

Manufactured in 1964, the second year of SP1 rifle production at Colt, with an approximate serial number range of SP00101 to SP02501. Features standard markings on the slab side lower receiver, with three-prong flash hider on the "M" marked barrel, standard post front sight on the "A" frame gas block with bayonet lug, windage adjustable flip up two-leaf rear peep sight on the upper receiver with fixed carry handle, no forward assist, short deflector, unserrated bolt carrier with chrome plated firing pin and bolt along with flathead retainer pin, and two-piece buffer. Fitted with a checkered pistol grip, long vented triangular handguard, fixed buttstock with ribbed rubber buttpad, and magazine with "COLT AR-15" on the floorplate. Includes a Colt 3x20 mm carry handle mounted scope with lens covers and a green M1 pattern web sling. The right side of the buttstock bears a cursive presentation inscription reading "Good shooting to/George Morrison from/Gene Stoner" written in white grease pencil. Eugene Morrison Stoner (1922-1997) is the famed inventor of the AR-10 and AR-15 platform, amongst others, with the SP1 representing Colt's commercial production version of Stoner's most successful brainchild. The use of Gene, the shortened form of Eugene, does suggest that Stoner and Morrison had a close relationship. While there is no documentation provided with the rifle to validate the signature or to indicate who George Morrison specifically is, Stoner's mother's maiden name was Morrison, though no specific relative by the name of George living during the time period could be located in family records. It's worth noting that there was also a George Morrison (RADM Ret. George Stephen Morrison (1919-2008), father of Jim Morrison, vocalist of The Doors rock band) serving as a U.S. Navy rear admiral from 1967 to 1975 who was an active participant in the Vietnam War; however, no evidence connecting the rifle to him could be located either.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine, retaining 90% original black anodized finish on the upper and lower receiver, with minor pitting on the refinished flash hider, gas block, and front section of the barrel, some surface rust behind the bayonet lug, brown patina/spotting showing on small steel parts namely the dust cover and front takedown pin, absent rear takedown pin detent and spring, and minor dings in the upper and lower receiver with some concealing paint added. The furniture is also exceptionally fine with some minor handling marks and clear coat over the inscription on the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. The scope is excellent with clear optics.
