Description:

Cartridge boards such as this example were a popular form of eye-catching advertisement provided to hardware and sporting goods stores by ammunition companies to hang in their shops around the turn of the 20th century, giving consumers a tangible representation of the wide range of munition goods they provided. These impressive cartridge display boards naturally make for compelling display pieces in gun rooms, gun shops, homes, and businesses. Being one of the most well-known British cartridge manufacturers of the period, the Eley Brothers Limited firm would have wanted boards such as this hanging in as many retail locations as possible to compete with the other domestic and foreign counterparts on the market at the time. This attractive board includes a range of revolver and rifle cartridges ranging from the diminutive .22 caliber BB cap to the impressive .450 No.2 Nitro Express, along with a few pin-fire cartridges, and four loaded stripper clips, each with black lettered labeling. The display is set on a natural hardwood backdrop, with an Eley Bros. Ltd. trade mark emblem in the center along with the headline "ELEY'S SOLID DRAWN/ AMMUNITION/FOR RIFLES AND REVOLVERS" at the top. With a dark brown oiled hardwood edged frame measuring 28 1/2 inches tall, 22 1/4 inches wide, and approximately one inch thick.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with some moderate fading to the background, some light flaking to the headline letters, light spotting on the steel stripper clips, along with attractive aged patina on the brass cartridges and labeling. The frame is fine.
