Attractive Massachusetts Arms Co. First Model Maynard Patent Percussion Sporting Carbine Two Barrel Set with Presentation Case

This cased First Model Maynard was likely made for presentation or purchased by an important individual. Approximately 5,000 First Model Maynard carbines were manufactured c. 1858-1859, according to "Flayderman's Guide" (9th Edition, 9B-073). Multiple Confederate states are known to have had contracts for Maynard rifles and carbines in both .35 and .50 caliber including Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia. For example, in early 1861, Jefferson Davis and J. Thompson entered into agreements for Maynard arms and ammunition that included 325 carbines and 175 rifles in .50 caliber and 300 carbines in .35 caliber along with one thousand rounds of ammunition for each gun. It has the standard three-line Massachusetts Arms Co. address on the right of the frame, while the left is marked with the two-line Maynard Arms Co. marking. The three-line Maynard patent marking is on the patchbox lid, and there is a label with the eight-line Maynard patent dates inside the patchbox. The currently fitted 20 1/4 inch rifled .35 Maynard barrel is unnumbered. The second included 26 inch smooth bore 28 gauge/.55 caliber shot barrel has the full matching serial number "1814" marked on the bottom, with serial number "1814" marked on the interior of the Maynard primer door of the gun. Fitted with a blade front sight on both barrels, and a ladder peep sight mounted on the upper tang. The stock is very finely figured and has a first model iron patchbox and buttplate. Includes a hardwood case with a fitted felt lined interior for the rifle and both barrels when disassembled, as well as various accessories including a powder flask, Maynard .35 caliber bullet mold, oiler, screwdriver, cleaning tools, leather shot bag containing lead shot, reloading tools, and some Maynard cartridges/casings.

Rating definitionFine, retains 85% plus original blue finish with some slight thinning, 50% plus original case colors, scattered minor surface freckling, with crisp markings and edges in the metal. Stock is very fine with attractive grain, some scattered light scratches and dings, and defined edges. Mechanically fine. Extra smooth bore barrel is fine, retains 80% original blue finish with some areas of thinning, and some patches of minor pitting at both ends. Case is very good with some cracks and scratches, and aging on the felt lined interior.
