Description:

Canes steadily grew in popularity from the 16th century into the early 20th century as a fashion accessory and symbol of one's status. Throughout this time, religious, biblical, and mythological symbols were very popular themes, perhaps only surpassed by animal motifs. The antique ivory grip of this example has been beautifully relief carved to represent the biblical tale of "Jonah and the whale". It shows Jonah's upper body above a column of water/waves, with a whale over his head in the act of consuming him. The grip is joined to the shaft with a silver band that has a dagged lower edge, and the shaft is of smooth ebony with a lightly colored horn tip. It measures approximately 36 1/2 inches overall.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the grip showing an attractively aged tone with a few faint age line and mild wear, while the shaft has some light handling marks and moderate wear on the tip.
