Ornate Etched Blade Lion Head Pommel British Cavalry Officer's Saber with Scabbard

Manufactured c. late 18th century to early 19th century. This is a highly attractive presentation grade British cavalry officer's saber. It is decorated with niter blue and gold filled engravings consisting of floral designs, a Royal Coat of Arms, and a crown above "GR" cipher with the flat spine maker signed "J.J. Runkel Solingen". Gilt brass hilt, with a crown above "GR" cipher design in the guard, a detailed lion head pommel, and a wire wrapped ivory grip. The saber measures approximately 37 3/4 inches in overall length with an approximately 32 1/2 inch curved blade. Includes a gilt brass mounted brown leather scabbard. Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection

ConditionVery fine sword, the blade is bright and retains much of the bright niter blue and gilt finishes, with a few patches of light oxidation, and most of the etching remaining crisp. Most of the bright gilt finish on the hilt remains. The ivory grip exhibits attractive natural aged patina, with a chip at the bottom, and some loosened wire wrap. The scabbard is fair with some of the gilt finish remaining on the brass mounts, a loose lower mount, and age related cracking in the leather with a separated section at the middle. An attractive early military saber!
