Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in .38-56 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1892, this is a solid example of the John Browning designed Winchester Model 1886 chambered in .38-56 W.C.F. The .38-56 W.C.F. cartridge was introduced by Winchester in 1887 as an attempt to outperform Ballard/Marlin's .38-55 cartridge, which had been around since 1884. The cartridge saw some commercial attempt but generally failed in its goal to replace the .38-55, as it had essentially the same ballistics while using slightly more powder. These Model 1886s chambered in .38-56 remained popular particularly in the American West for both varmint control and hunting well into the 20th century. The top barrel flat on this example is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking is at the breech. The model designation is marked on the upper tang, while the two-line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a German silver "Rocky Mountain" type blade front sight (lower half of sides covered in black enamel) and an elevation adjustable No. 24 "Sporting" notch rear sight (vertical portion filed shorter). It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

ConditionVery good plus, retains 30% of the thinned original blue finish, faint traces of original case colors with the balance silvered, and 30% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate. The revarnished wood is also very good with some scattered minor handling marks and a hairline crack at the rear of the upper tang. Mechanically excellent.
