Scarce Newton Arms Co. Inc. First Model 1916 Bolt Action Rifle

Manufactured circa 1916, this is one of just some 2,400 Model 1916 rifles manufactured by Newton Arms Co. Inc. before folding and entering receivership in 1917. These Newton rifles are known as some of the finest sporting rifles ever produced in the United States but were ill-fated due to World War I causing a lack of supplies to manufacture Newton's specialty cartridges. The rifle has a blued barrel with a beaded blade foresight and a two-leaf rear sight and is marked "NEWTON ARMS CO. INC./BUFFALO, N.Y." on the top along with "30 NEWTON" on the left and "PATENTS PENDING" at the breech. The barrel is fitted to the blued action with features a checkered bolt knob, a folding rear peep sight affixed to the cocking piece, Newton modified safety, and set triggers. The rifle is fitted in a nicely figured and multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with Schnabel tip forend, blued steel grip cap, and horn buttplate.

ConditionExcellent, retaining 95% original blue finish with light handling evidence and some light spotting. The stock has a small crack at the left of the action, some varnish wear, some insect damage on the buttplate, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
