Rare World War II U.S. Rock Island Arsenal Inspected Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Lyman Alaskan Scope

Manufactured in 1942. According to page 298 of Rodger Rule's "The Rifleman's Rifle" this rifle is one of just 2,366 Model 70s ordered by the U.S. Government during World War II to be used as long range sniper rifles. The rifle features a ramped hooded beaded blade front sight, standard Winchester barrel markings, and rear sight dovetail filled with the front Stith mount which holds a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2x scope. The left side of the barrel and front receiver ring show Winchester's "WP" proof mark. The action is marked with the serial number on the right of the front receiver ring and the Winchester trademark on the left. The rear peep sight holes host the rear of the Stith mount (one screw absent). The rifle is fitted in a straight grain pistol grip stock with multi-point checkering, sling swivels, and checkered steel buttplate. The left side of the stock ahead of the wrist is stamped with Frank Krack's boxed "RIA/FK3" Rock Island Arsenal acceptance cartouche, another example of which can be seen on page 298 of Rule's book. Included is a leather military pattern sling and a set of leather scope caps.

ConditionVery fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with light handling evidence. The lightly sanded stock is very good with some dings and scratches and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The front scope mount shows some cold blue touch-ups. Scope optics are clear, reticle is crisp. A great chance to own a scarce Government owned Model 70!
