Description:

Very high quality, large frame, English six-shot pepperbox pistol made by John Blissett of London. The pistol has ribbed and fluted barrel group, with a large flared nipple shield. The barrel group and action have a high polish blue finish. The hammer and buttcap are color casehardened. The one piece grip is European walnut with very fine checkering and steel buttcap. The buttcap has a small percussion cap compartment with hinged trap. There is tight, hand engraved English style scrollwork on a stippled background on the frame. The bar hammer, underside of the trigger guard and buttcap trap door have the same tight scroll designs as the frame, Sams the stippled background. The border is engraved around the barrel group muzzle. The barrel screw is engraved. The left side of the frame is engraved: "J. BLISSETT/LONDON" in two lines on a banner on the left side of the frame. Each barrel is numbered at the chamber. A "crown/V" or a "crown/CP" proof is located in each barrel rib. The pistol is in a English style mahogany case with round brass inscription plate. The 10-compartment case is lined with green baize. Two of the compartments have lids with turned ivory handles. The case contains deluxe silver plated tools including a tiny (2-5/8 inch long) powder flask with bright blue retaining spring and screw. A combination bullet mold and rammer marked with the bore size, "66" and a wood headed combination rod with ball screw, 2 cleaning jags, a bore brush, and seating head. The case also contains a turned ivory cap container and a key which operates the lock. The screwdriver and oiler are missing but easily replaced. The case lid has a large makers label with the British Royal coat of arms. The label is engraved: "JOHN BLISSETT./GUN & RIFLE MAKER,/322 High Holborn,/ LONDON./ EVERY DESCRIPTION OF PISTOLS AND AIR GUNS MANUFACTURED." in five lines.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol is in excellent condition and has approximately 90% of the original blue and casehardened finish. Virtually all of the blued finish in present on the barrel group. The only finish loss is some very insignificant blue flaking and edge wear on the high sides of the barrel flutes. The frame and grip straps have some scattered finish loss with about 80% of the original blue. The bar hammer and butt cap have vivid casehardening colors. All metal surfaces are smooth and free from rust or corrosion. The expert scroll engraving is crisp. The pistol appears to be unfired: the barrel muzzle is bright; the percussion nipples and barrel breech do not show any firing wear. The percussion nipples have a brighter blue finish. The case exterior is in very fine to excellent condition and shows only very limited wear. The case interior is in fine condition. The green baize lining has faded but shows minimal wear. The silver-plated powder flask is tarnished but free from dents or other wear. The cleaning and attachments are in fine condition. This pistol is an outstanding example of an early and very popular handgun design. It would be hard to improve upon the condition of this cased English pepperbox.
