Description:

The Model 1885 was the first single shot rifle produced by Winchester and the first of many John Browning patents that Winchester would purchase. Manufactured in 1886, the second year of production, this rifle is marked with the standard two line address on top of the barrel in front of the rear sight and " LONG 32CAL. R.F." at the breech. The "LONG" has been added with a different die. The serial number is marked on the lower tang and bottom of the barrel. Lyman dovetail blade front sight with an ivory bead, adjustable rear sight, blue barrel and casehardened remaining metal parts. Note the rounded contour of the high side breechblock. Smooth forearm with ebony insert and straight grip stock with crescent steel butt plate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine (with exception noted) with approximately 90% original blue on the barrel with the balance having thinned to a smooth plum brown. The receiver retains approximately 75% of the fading case colors and it shows some signs of light cleaning. Strong traces of casehardening colors remain on the upper left side of the lever with the remaining surfaces having a smooth gray patina. The forearm appears to be a correct replacement, (grain different than stock), and is in excellent condition with a few minor dings. The buttstock remains very fine with scattered minor dings and nicks. Mechanically excellent.
