Winchester M1876 rifle manufactured in 1882. This is a third pattern M1876 rifle with the integral dust cover rail. The shortened barrel is fitted with a modified German silver dovetail blade front sight and adjustable flat top rear sight, and is marked: "WINCHESTER'S - REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT./ KING'S-IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The magazine tube has also been shortened and the carrier set back. The upper barrel tang is marked "MODEL 1876". Smooth straight grip stock with a metal forearm tip and a smooth crescent butt with a trapdoor compartment. The dust cover is a replacement.

Fair as period modified (barrel and magazine tube), with a mixed brown and gray patina showing on most of the surface, along with some dents, scratches, and minor pitting concentrated around the ejector port. The stock is cleaned and repaired, with some chipping and darkening around the metal, a few patched holes, a crack in the right side of the comb, and some minor scratches and pressure dents. The dust cover is a replacement. The action is fine.
