Description:

Nickel plated, U.S. marked S&W First Model Schofield Revolver that was modified (barrel shortened) for sale to the civilian trade by one of the retailers of the time period. The revolver has the S&W address and "65" - "71" patent dates in two lines on the left side of the ejector housing, flanked by Maltese crosses, the reverse is marked: "+SCHOFIELD'S PAT. APR. 22D 1873+" and the underside is marked "L P/ B". The pistol butt is marked "U.S." along with the serial number. The rear cylinder face is stamped with the serial number, a "L" proofmark and a Ordnance sub-inspector's "P" mark. Smooth varnished walnut grips, with "38" on butt of left grip and a faint, but legible, cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Period replated, with most of the nickel finish remaining. A mixed gray patina is visible on the high edges, along with some light spotting and oxidization. The grips are revarnished and repaired, with a mended crack and a filled chip on the right panel, along with mild varnish loss and dings. Action is fine.
