Colt Single Action Army with Texas Ranger History and Holster

Manufactured in 1905. Marked with the standard two line Hartford barrel address on top of the barrel with "38 W.C.F." on the left. The left side of the frame is marked with the two line three word patent stamp followed by the Rampant Colt. The patent stamp is over stamped with the number "19", the same number "19", is stamped again on the same area of the right frame. The significance of 19 is that it is the badge number of Texas Ranger/ Sheriff Jeff Milton. The grips are standard checkered hard rubber with Rampant Colts. The brown leather holster is stamped on the front "DIAMOND MANUFACTURING CO. / DIAMOND BRAND" and stamped on the back belt loop "D34384" and is tooled along the borders. The accompanying documentation states that this gun belonged to Texas Ranger / Sheriff Jeff Milton, the son of the Governor of Florida. In 1877 he moved to Texas where he worked for his brother in law as a cowboy on a cattle ranch where he saved his money and bought a horse, a "six gun" and an old .44 Winchester. Three years later he joined the Texas Rangers and reached the rank of corporal. In May, 1881 Milton and another man were accused of murdering W.P. Patterson, a cattleman living in Colorado City. He was cleared of the charges and by 1884 he was working as a deputy sheriff in Socorro County, New Mexico. While at this post he killed three Mexican gunmen. Milton moved to El Paso where he became chief of police. With his deputy, the famous George Scarborough, he killed Martin Morose, a suspected rustler. In July 1898 the two men badly wounded Bronco Bill Walters in a gunfight. In 1900 Milton was working for Wells Fargo. In one incident he killed outlaw, Jack Dunlap. Later he worked as a range detective, a prospector and an official in the Immigration Service. In 1930 he retired to Tombstone and died in Tucson in 1947. He was always known as "a good man with a gun." A corresponding Winchester Model 1866 is also in this auction.

ConditionVery good. The revolver shows about 20-30% finish mainly in protected areas, with the balance turning a smooth plum brown. The grips show moderate to heavy wear. The markings remain clear and crisp The action is excellent. The holster is fine, the stitching is all tight and there is a scuff at the cylinder area. A truly significant Lawman's gun.
