Barrel: 22 1/8 inch octagon to round
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: maple

Rating:

OC - FINE- all original parts; over 30% original finish, sharp lettering, numerals and design on metal and wood; minor marks in wood.

Description:

The light weight barrel is marked "D. H. HILLIARD CORNISH N.H. 2176" on the top left flat with "CS 3 S 1 3/8" on the bottom flat. There is a long bar adjustable peep sight secured to the barrel with a screw and a globe and pin front sight with no provision for a ramrod. The hammer is stamped "76". The tiger maple stock is mounted with an iron scroll trigger guard, crescent buttplate and toe plate, with an adjustable set trigger and German silver cap box and a German silver pheasant inlay on the large oval shaped cheekpiece. The consignor states that the underside barrel markings have been deciphered mostly from research done by Ray Mitchell. The first number, usually a 6 found on a rifle and a 2 usually found on a pistol, is a designation of a distance in rods that the piece was tested at ( 6 rods about 100 ft., 2 rods 35 feet). The second number is the inches of powder in the bore or the charge of powder the rifle was tested with. The third number is usually a fractional number referring to the size of the group that was obtained when the piece was tested. There sometimes appears the initials C.S. (Chase Smith), G. (George Hilliard G.E.H.) and C. (Charles Hilliard) referring to who tested the firearm. If no initials, then David probably did the testing himself.

Rating Definition:

Refinished. The barrel has been cleaned and cold blued and is currently turning a translucent plum brown to blue color. The stock is good. Mechanically the set trigger is out of adjustment.

B) D.H. Hilliard Under Hammer Percussion Rifle

Manufacturer: Hilliard D H
Model: Percussion
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 44
Barrel: 28 inch octagon
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: birch
Item Views: 964

Rating:

OE - GOOD - some minor replacement parts; metal smoothly rusted or lightly pitted in places, cleaned; principal lettering, numerals and design on metal legible; lightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired; in good working order.

Description:

The barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD / CORNISH / N.H. " and "128" on the top left flat and "6 to 2--- 2 - 2 3/8" on the bottom flat. The front sight is German silver and the rear is an adjustable sporting rear missing the ramp. The barrel mounted adjustable bar peep sight is missing. There are four steel ramrod pipes soldered to the bottom of the barrel, one of them loose. The hammer is marked "487". The figured birch stock has an iron trigger guard, toe plate and crescent buttplate with a brass oval inlay in the oval molded cheekpiece. The consignor notes that this rifle was received in Mineral Point, Wisconsin and is the second rifle he has found with the "to" barrel marking ("6 to 2--- 2 - 2 3/8").

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel is a smooth plum brown with moderate high edge wear. The stock has been lightly sanded and oiled and cracked at the wrist and repaired. The brass inlay in the cheekpiece appears to be a replacement. Mechanically good.
