Description:

British No. 4 MK I (T) sniper rifle manufactured in 1944. The rifle has a black phosphate finish with walnut stock, forearm and handguard. The stock is fitted with the unique wooden sniper cheek piece used only on No. 4 (T) sniper rifles. The rifle is fitted with a No.32 MK III Telescopic Sight. The 3X scope has the standard British pointer and cross-wire reticule and click-adjustable windage and elevation knobs. The rugged scope has a detachable mount that is fastened to blocks on the left side of the receiver by two large clamping screws. The scope can be removed from the rifle and re-attached with minimal impact of the rifle zero. The rifle is also fitted with a folding peep- aperture rear sight. The battle sight was removed during the sniper modification to provide clearance for scope. A third, sniper, sling swivel is mounted on the trigger guard finial in front of the magazine. The maker's code, "M47C", the date of production, "1944", the serial number, "B32699" and the sniper designation "TR" are stamped on the left side of the butt-socket. A "T" indicating a sniper conversion is stamped on the left side of the receiver between the scope mounting blocks. The Holland & Holland conversion code, "S51" is stamped on the underside of the stock. The serial number, "32699" is stamped on the underside of the forearm and on the back of the bolt handle. The serial number of the scope originally fitted to the rifle, "19001" is stamped on the top of the stock wrist. The left side of the scope mount is stamped with a rifle serial number, "H35008". The mount clamps are consecutively numbered "972" and "973". The scope body is roll-stamped: "TEL STG No.32 MK III/OS 2039A/AK&S No 16676/1944/ Broad Arrow". The rifle is fitted with a wooden transit case issued with each rifle. A label glued to the top of the lid lists the equipment issued with the rifle and has instructions for rifle maintenance. The rugged and accurate No.4 MK I (T) Sniper was probably the best sniper rifle issued during WWII. No. 4 rifles found to be especially accurate during test firing were shipped to the famous British gunmaker Holland & Holland where they were stripped, re-stocked, and fitted with telescopic sights. The No. 4 MK I (T) snipers remained in British service until 1970 when a small number were modified to the 7.62 MM L42A1.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle retains approximately 95% of the original black phosphate finish. Aside from one small scrape in the left side of the forearm, the stock, forearm and handguard are in excellent condition and show only storage wear. The telescopic sight has excellent optics and retains 95% of the original finish. The windage and elevation knobs turn freely. The markings on the scope, rifle receiver, butt socket, stock and forearm are crisp. The original telescopic sight issued with the rifle was apparently replaced. The scope presently on the rifle is the correct No. 32 MK III scope for this rifle but the serial numbers on the scope, mount and rifle stock do not match. The green-painted, wooden transit case is in good overall condition. The case exterior shows the usual shipping wear and both of the leather handles are broken. The case interior remains in very good condition. This is an excellent example of one of the best sniper rifles issued by any combatant during WWII.
