One of a Kind Early Production Custom Engraved Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver with Factory and W.R. Powell Letters

Manufactured in 1936, the second year of production. According to the accompanying Smith & Wesson factory letter, this Registered Magnum revolver #812, was shipped from the factory on February 7, 1936 and delivered to the Balboa Gun Club, Balboa Canal Zone, Attn: J.R. Strauss, Secretary Treasurer. The letter also verifies the serial and registered numbers, barrel length, blue finish, 1/10 Patridge front and square notch rear sights and that it was sighted at 25 yards with magnum ammunition. The revolver features relief vine like scroll engraving covering the sides of the barrel, frame, and the cylinder flats. All engraved surfaces have a textured background. Also with the revolver is a typed letter, undated, on W.R. Powell letterhead referencing the appraisal of Smith & Wesson 357 Registered Magnum with serial number 47252 and registration #812. Powell states in his research that the revolver was shipped in early 1936 and a brief history of the model. The letter goes on the say that this revolver "is one a kind" (typo omitting the word "of") and that sometime in the 1950s this revolver was fully engraved at the shop of Kurt Jaeger in Mainz, Germany. The high relief vine like floral scrolls are well chosen for the 6 1/2" barrel and the finish is a high luster blue. Powell's letter ends with the line "Magna-style elephant ivory stocks with inlaid Smith and Wesson medallions complete the effect of what remains today as a functional work of modern art." The revolver has the standard barrel markings in panels on each side, the Smith & Wesson trademark logo appears on the lower left side of the frame and "MADE IN U.S.A." is on the right front. Barrel and frame serial numbers match and the frame is marked "REG 812". The sighting edge of the front sight is painted red, the top of the barrel rib and top strap are checkered, the trigger is serrated, the hammer spur is finely checkered and the sides are serrated. The smooth elephant ivory stocks are adorned with Smith & Wesson medallions.

ConditionExcellent as custom embellished with 99% original finish remaining. There is some minor wear on the muzzle, a prominent dragline on the cylinder and thinning on the ejector rod. The grips are excellent with a couple of hairline age cracks and an attractive grain. The grips fit perfectly to the revolver. The hammer and trigger have faded to a pleasant gray with traces of the original case colors. A great opportunity to own this magnificent, one of a kind, custom engraved, documented Smith & Wesson 357 Registered Magnum. It truly is a work of art.
