The accompanying factory letter dated November 1, 2002 gives a brief history of the Model of 1950 revolver and that it was a special built presentation revolver shipped to Ed McGivern, Great Falls, Mt. on April 30, 1954. The letter verifies the serial number, blue finish, 6 1/2" barrel, equipped with the McGivern gold bead front sight and that the side plate was engraved "Ed McGivern / of Montana". Included are copies of the letter sent to Fred Miller, Assistant Sales Manager from McGivern requesting the purchase of a Model of 1950, Mr. Millers responding letter, copies of the sales invoice, invoice for the installation of the gold bead front sight, and a letter from Lewis E. Yearout of Montana offering the revolver for sale. There is also a brief factory letter dated October 31, 1980 which verifies the same information as the 2002 letter. Ed McGivern was a world famous exhibition and trick shooter during the 1930's through the 1950's who shot throughout the U.S. and Europe. At one time he was dubbed "The Fastest Gun In the World" and his feats of trick and speed shooting were legendary in the shooting industry. Ed helped develop early pistol training courses and defensive shooting techniques for the FBI. Factory equipped, at McGivern's request, with his personally designed famous gold bead front sight. Aside from the gold bead front sight and presentation inscription on the frame, this is a standard 45 Hand Ejector Model of 1950 with casehardened trigger and hammer and fitted with checkered walnut grips with silver S&W medallions and diamond insert. As stated in the Smith & Wesson factory letter from Roy Jinks, this was probably the last gun Ed McGivern purchased directly from Smith & Wesson.
