Dated 1818, the 1777 musket was the pattern used by the French troops sent to North America to assist the Continental Army and continued to be issued thru the Napoleonic Wars. Brass blade sight on the front barrel band, with the "M 1777" mark on the tang and "1818" stamped on the upper left flat. Detachable brass flashpan on the lock, which is marked in script "Manufre Royle/ de Charleville" between the pan and hammer. Smooth straight grip stock with trumpet head ramrod, finger grooves on the rear trigger guard finial, contoured cheekpiece, flat brass buttplate and a pair of round cartouche stamps on the right side of the buttstock, one marked "P.L.D." under a faint bird, the other illegible writing around a plug marked "69".
