Rare Special Order Sharps Model 1859 Carbine Inscribed Capt. J.W. Carr 2 NHV with Double Set Triggers

This particular carbine has a tinned finish and is without the saddle ring and bar and has double set triggers, just like a Berdan Sharps Rifle. Marked on top of the barrel "NEW MODEL 1859" behind the rear sight, and "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO / HARTFORD, CONN." ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "C. SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12TH 1848", and the right side is marked with the 1859 Lawrence patent date and the C. Sharps 1852 patent date. The serial number is marked on the upper tang. It is equipped with a brass blade front sight, Lawrence patent rear sight with folding leaf graduated to 800 yards, double set triggers, smooth forearm with a single barrel band and straight grip stock with iron buttplate and sling swivel. The lower tang is marked "CAPT / J W CARR / 2 N H V". The marking is done in small individual letters and appears to be of period. James W. Carr was a Captain in "C" Company of the Second Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteers during the Civil War. Carr was discharged on June 21, 1864 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. Captain Carr's experiences during the Civil War included an encounter with the Merrimack, President Lincoln visiting his camp, the Battle of Yorktown, Battle of Seven Pines and Fair Oaks, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. After the war Carr became a successful lumber dealer. He died in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 5th, 1875.

ConditionFine. The barrel has a crisp smooth brown patina with small amount of light spotting. The remaining surfaces have a smooth mottled grayish patina. The wood is very fine showing a nice tiger stripe pattern. The forearm shows minimal marks and the stock has a minor crack on the right wrist and a few minor dents and dings. All markings are clear. The action is excellent. Writer has never seen as unique of a Sharps Carbine.
