U.S. Navy Dahlgren Pattern Plymouth Rifle Bayonet

A scarce example of the massive Bowie Knife-bayonet designed by Admiral John A. Dahlgren for the U.S. Navy Whitney Plymouth Rifle. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing of Chicopee, Mass. The knife-bayonet features a 12 inch semi-spear point blade measuring 1/3" thick, dated 1861 on the right ricasso with heavy brass guard. Solid brass guard and hilt, with grooved walnut grip marked (roughly) "7034" on the left side. With sheath, unmarked black leather with brass tip, throat and frog stud.

ConditionVery good. A few patches of pitting are visible on the blade, with some light spotting and handling marks. Brass is showing a mixed patina, finely aged overall with patches of an attractive bronze-like color. Grip is good, with light scratches and pressure dents. Sheath fair, with cracking and flaking of the leather appropriate to age and a mixed patina on the tip and throat.
