Two Civil War Era Commercial Military Style Holsters for .44 Caliber Percussion Revolvers, Cartridge Box and Cap Pouch

Civil War lot that consists of two military style, black leather, full-flap, commercial holsters for percussion revolvers, a Watertown Arsenal cartridge box for .58 caliber rifle-musket, and a percussion cap pouch. The first holster is nearly identical to the military issue holster for the Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver except that the flap has an external latch tab that is secured by a loop on the holster body rather than a brass finial. The form fitting holster is lined with black leather and has a 1 1/2-inch belt loop sewn on the back. This is a high quality, military style holster that was probably manufactured for sale to officers. The second holster has a 'California' profile body with brass finial that secures a 3/4 flap. The simple, black leather holster is unlined and has a toe plug and 1-inch wide belt loop that is sewn to the back of the holster. The holster appears to be designed to fit either a Colt or Remington Army Revolver. Neither holster has any visible marker's markings. Both holsters are typical of the revolvers carried by Federal and Confederate officers during the Civil War. The cartridge box has a lead filled brass "US" plate on the front flap and is boldly marked: "WATERTOWN ARSENAL/1864" on the inner flap. The box has the late style, riveted and sewn latch tab and is complete with two original cartridge tins. Both sling loops have been removed from the bottom of the box. The percussion cap pouch has the maker's name and address lightly stamped on the inner flap. The pouch retains all of the original fleece lining.

ConditionThe full flap holster is in excellent condition. The leather surfaces are smooth and free from cracking or flaking. The seams are tight. The only significant wear is some minor cracking on the latch tab. The California pattern holster is in fine overall condition. The holster body and flap have minor flex marks and there is scattered, minor flaking along the edges of the flap and throat. The stitching on the seams is tight. These holsters are fine examples of commercial, military pattern holsters that were probably manufactured during the Civil War. The cartridge box is in very fine overall condition. The box body and inner and outer flaps are smooth with no cracks or flaking. There is some light cracking and some flaking on the implement pouch flap. The markings on the inner flap are crisp. The cap pouch is in good overall condition with light surface cracking on the outer flap. The fleece liner is clean and shows minimal wear. One of the loops on the back of the pouch is broken.
