Civil War Burnside Breech loading Percussion Carbine

Purchased in quantity for use by the Federal Cavalry 1863-1864, the Burnside was very popular with the troops for it's accuracy and reliability. This is a 4th/5th Model carbine, with the signature guide screw on the side of the frame, and corresponding groove in the breechblock. Top of chamber lightly marked "BURNSIDE'S PATENT MODEL OF 1864" Blade front and two leaf folding rear sight, with the latter numbered 1, 2 and 5, stamped "PW" behind the rear sight and "CAST-STEEL (illeg.)" between the rear sight and barrel band. Partially legible markings are present on the frame ahead of the breechblock, with a checkered hammer and sling bar running the full length of the left side, matching numbers, and small letter proofs on the lever. Smooth straight grip stock, with a single barrel band, no visible cartouches, sling swivel and a small "H" proof on the breechblock.

ConditionVery good. The barrel has been cleaned to a bright gray patina, with dark spots scattered about. A number of dings are visible on top of the breechblock, with the finish on the frame silvering out with dark areas and some mild spotting. Stock is good, with a mended chip on the left side of the forearm, a number of scattered dings and scratches, and some light chipping. Mechanically fine.
