Scarce Engraved Manton & Son 28 Gauge Damascus Double Barrel Shotgun

Single bead sight on a solid rib, extractor and double triggers. The Damascus barrels are marked "MANTON & CO GUN MAKERS TO H.R.H. THE" on the left barrel and "DUKE OF EDINBURGH K.G. LONDON & CALCUTTA" on the right barrel. Fine scroll engraved casehardened frame including the lock plates and hammers. The scrollwork continues on the blued break lever and trigger guard. Checkered forearm and straight grip stock with smooth shotgun style iron buttplate. Has a sling swivel stud on the underside of the rib (buttstock sling swivel stud has been removed). Length of pull is approximately 14".

ConditionVery good. The barrels retain about 40% of the Damascus pattern and about 40% blue finish, thinning at the muzzles and along the rib. The trigger guard has a smooth gray patina with some minor traces of blue in the protected areas. The buttplate retains about 85% blue with a mixed gray and brown patina at the heal and toe and along the edges. The frame retains about 20% of the bright case colors strongest around the hammers, on the fences, under the break lever, on the water table and around the triggers, otherwise has faded to a gray patina. There is an unplugged hole from the removed buttstock sling swivel stud, otherwise the sanded and refinished wood has some minor dings, dents and scratches mostly near the toe. The checkering is crisp. The break lever needs an adjustment, but functions.
