Description:

Early production Springfield Armory Model 1903A1 National Match rifle that was manufactured in 1930. The rifle has a parkerized finish on the barrel and receiver, polished bolt, receiver rails and follower and an oil-finished, walnut "C" stock. The bolt has the reversed safety installed on National Match Model 1903A1 rifles until 1931. The barrel is stamped: "SA/Ordnance Shell and Flame/3-30" in three lines behind the front sight. The muzzle is stamped with the distinctive star-gauge mark and the top of the barrel is stamped with the star-gauge number "I/3408" just ahead of the rear sight base. The underside of the stock has the rifle serial number, "1348645" stamped in front of the lower sling swivel. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped with the standard marking: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903./1348645" in five lines. The left side of the stock is marked with the Ordnance final inspector's initials: "D.A.L." enclosed in a rectangle. An "S" sub-inspection marks is stamped in the magazine cut-off lever cut-out. An encircled block, "P" firing proof is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The bolt is polished and stamped "N.S." in small block letters on the top of the handle. The bolt does not have the rifle serial number electro-penciled on the body. The rear sight has a polished face, flat-faced windage and elevation knobs and, correctly, lacks the 2750 yard center notch at the top of the front sight leaf. The magazine cut-off lever has non-serifed lettering and the "OFF" side of the lever is polished bright. The buttplate has the deep checkering introduced in 1924. The original nickel-plated oiler is located in the stock butt trap. Springfield Armory manufactured 2754 Model 1903A1 National Match rifles in 1930; 805 of these rifles were entirely new production and the remaining 1949 used some components from the First Year 1929 NM rifles.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle retains approximately 99% of the original dark, black-green parkerized finish. The parkerized finish on the receiver has a very granular texture that is rougher than the typical finish on most SA Model 1903 rifles made in 1929-32. However, the finish on the rear sight base, barrel and other components is typical of the SA Model 1903 finish from this period. The polishing on the inside of the receiver appears to be original. The bolt is a replacement; all original Model 1903A1 National Match rifles had the rifle serial number electro penciled on the bolt body. The bolt has been recently polished and some scattered light pitting is visible on the body. The lower barrel band is a replacement with a black parkerized finish and a early, serifed, "U" marking. The stock and hand guard are original to the rifle and are in excellent condition with crisp serial numbers, inspection mark, and firing proof. The bore is bright. This is an excellent example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1903A1 National Match rifle.
