This M1876 rifle is a First Model manufactured without the dust cover. The left side of the lower tang under the stock and the under tang slot on the stock are numbered "2351", which is the original assembly number. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S - REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S- IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED - MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight, there is no caliber markings on the barrel or carrier. The upper tang is marked with the early style "--MODEL 1876--" and the remarked serial number on the lower tang behind the lever latch. Brass blade front sight and adjustable folding rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a steel forend cap and steel crescent buttplate with compartment.

Rating Definition:

Good. The once period cleaned barrel, magazine, and receiver have a smooth streaked brown patina and dark areas on the rear portion of the receiver. The lever has a smooth dark gray mottled patina. The buttplate has a smooth gray patina. The wood has been varnished some time ago and the wood remains about good with most of the finish remaining and overall scattered minor gouges, dents, dings, and scratches. There are dark areas scattered on the stock. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
