Description:

This Third Model 1873 Rifle was manufactured in 1886. The rifle has a replacement blade front and adjustable buckhorn rear sights. The receiver has the distinctive Third Model integral dust cover rib and dust cover with serrated edges. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S - IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED - MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860-" ahead of the rear sight, the caliber designation "44 CAL." behind the rear sight, and "44 CAL" is inscribed on the brass cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is marked "MODEL 1873" with foliate decorations at either end and the serial number is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a steel forend cap and crescent buttplate with cleaning rod compartment.

Rating Definition:

Good as modified. The barrel and slightly shortened magazine tube have a brown patina with some pin prick type pitting on both. The buttplate and lever have a smooth dark brown patina. The receiver and dust cover show signs of cleaning and have a smooth gray finish with strong traces of original finish in protected areas. There is some pin prick pitting on the dust cover and a small amount of minor pitting on the right side of the receiver and right side plate. The "weathered" wood is good with a few scattered minor dings, dents, and scratches. The barrel markings are faded, but readable, and the tang markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically functions, but lever spring is weak, (thus allowing lever to fall).
