Description:

This model was manufactured between 1884 and 1890 and was one of the most popular rifles in the Ballard line. The left side of the receiver is marked "MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A. / BALLARD'S. PATENT. NOV. 5, 1861", the top of the barrel at the breech is marked "38-55" and the matching serial number is marked on bottom of the receiver and on the bottom barrel flat under the forearm. Globe and pin front sight dove tailed to the barrel, the rear sight has been removed and a filler block installed and a factory Ballard mid-range tang sight has been installed. Double set trigger, full loop lever and mounted with a smooth forearm and replacement English walnut pistol grip stock with a cheekpiece and nickel plated Swiss style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a brownish patina with scattered light oxidation and stains from some type of solvent or chemical. The bottom flats under the forearm show strong traces of the original blue finish with some heavy rust and for the most part the barrel is smooth and free of any pitting. The receiver and lever have a smooth mottled gray patina. The buttplate retains approximately 70% of the original dulling nickel plating. The exposed brass has an aged patina. The wood is very good overall as sanded and refinished. Overall there are only a few light dings and handling marks. The stock and forearm show different finishes and grain due to the stock being of English walnut. The stock is cracked at the action and undersized, but the buttplate is oversized. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is good.
