Robbins & Lawrence U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Percussion Rifle

Model 1841 Percussion Rifle manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont in 1851. The rifle has the distinctive oversize brass patch box with brass buttplate, trigger guard, side-plate and barrel bands. The barrel was originally browned and the lock and hammer had a casehardened finish. The rifle has the original iron ramrod with flared brass tip. The walnut stock is oil-finished. The rifle has a .58 caliber bore and was probably altered from .54 to .58 caliber after 1855. The rifle is accompanied by a three-leaf rear sight with leafs graduated for 100, 300 and 500 yards. The sight is similar to that fitted to Colt revolving rifles. The lock plate is marked: "WINDSOR VT/1851" in two vertical lines behind the hammer. "ROBBINS/&/LAWRENCE/U.S." is stamped on the lock plate in front of the hammer. "U.S./SM/P" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel opposite the bolster. "U.S." is stamped on the top of the buttplate between the upper screw and the heel.

ConditionFair. The rifle has not been cleaned or altered and remains in original 'attic' condition. The barrel, lock plate and hammer have a dark age patina. There is moderate to heavy flash pitting on the hammer, nipple bolster and adjacent portions of the barrel. Other portions of the barrel have scattered surface rust. The brass furniture has not been polished and has a dark age patina. The stock has moderate to heavy handling wear and is in good condition. The original rear sight has been removed. The sight that accompanies the rifle appears to be a period replacement. The upper sling swivel is broken. This is a solid example of a Robbins & Lawrence Model 1841 percussion rifle that appears to have seen action in the Civil War.
