This Colt Model 1878 D.A. revolver with Colt factory letter that states it was shipped to Schoverling, Daley & Gales in New York, New York, on September 29, 1904. The letter lists the caliber as '44c', the barrel length as '5 1/2"' and the finish as 'Blue'. The revolver has the Colt high-polish commercial blue finish and is fitted with two-piece, black hard rubber 'bird's head' grips. The grips are checkered and embossed with the Rampant Colt trademark. The loading gate, trigger and the top of the hammer are niter blue. The lanyard loop has a casehardened finish. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The underside of the barrel is stamped "B 44" just ahead of the frame. The lower left side of the frame is stamped with the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The full serial number, "50/493" is stamped on the bottom of the butt ahead of the lanyard loop. The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number, "493". The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "69". There is a factory six-pointed rework star stamp present on the right rear trigger guard bow. What work was performed on the revolver is unclear as the finish is totally original.

Excellent. The revolver retains 90% plus of the original high polish blue finish. Wear is limited to edge wear on the muzzle, ejector shroud and high points of the cylinder and frame. There is some thinning in the blue on the back strap and the underside of the trigger guard. The hammer, trigger and loading gate retain approximately 95% of the fiery niter blue finish. All of the markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The grips are in very good overall condition with minimal handling wear but have faded to a brown patina. The action functions fine, but is slightly loose. This is an excellent example of a late production Colt Frontier Six Shooter, Model 1878 D.A. revolver.
