Scarce Custer Period Model 1872 Saber Belt, Hazen Cartridge Loops and Full Flap Military Holster

Custer period cavalry holster rig. The group consists of: (1) Model 1872 Cavalry Saber Belt with, 1872 cast brass "US" belt plate, detachable saber slings with brass hooks, (2) detachable, leather, 20 round, 'Hazen Loop' .45-70 cartridge carrier and (3) Civil War issue, full flap holster for .44 caliber percussion revolver. All three items are black bridle leather. The holster does not have a brass reinforcing rivet for the closure strap which indicates that it was manufactured prior to 1864. It clearly shows the impression of a Colt percussion revolver. However these holsters were issued and used with both Colt and Remington .44 caliber percussion revolvers. The holsters remained in service well into the 1870s and were also issued with Colt Single Action Cavalry revolvers. The 7th Cavalry carried M1872 Saber Belts with Civil War percussion holsters. The 20-round Hazen detachable cartridge loops for .45-70 cartridges were issued in limited numbers and are scarce.

ConditionGood overall. The bridle leather saber belt has light flexing but no flaking. The saber slings are in fine condition. The brass belt plate has not been polished and is in very good condition. The belt retains the original leather keeper. The Hazen cartridge loops are in very good to fine condition. The leather is smooth and has minimal cracking. The holster is in fair condition. The toe plug is missing and there is an addition hole in the closure strap. The holster body and flap show moderate flexing but no flaking. The seams on the holster body and belt loop are tight. This is a good example of a desirable mid-1870s cavalry holster rig.
