Description:

This is a solid example of a scarce Gibbs Carbine manufactured by William F. Brooks, New York City in 1863. Only 1,052 Gibbs carbines were manufactured prior to the destruction of the Phoenix Armory by fire during the New York draft riots of 1863. The government had contracted for a total of 10,000. About 500 Gibbs were issued to the 10th Missouri Cavalry with lesser quantities to the 13th and 14th New York Cavalry. The lock plate has desirable marking "Wm F. BROOKS / MANFR NEW YORK" forward of the hammer. The top of the receiver is marked: "L.H. GIBBS / PAT'D / JANY 8, 1856" at breech. Brass blade front and three folding leaf rear sights. Iron mountings, the breech, lock plate and trigger guard/lever were casehardened and the remaining parts blue. Mounted with a one piece straight grip half stock with a carbine style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The metal surfaces are a mix of mostly dark and a silver gray patina. There is some minor pitting on the left side plate and some moderate pitting on the buttplate. The stock is fine with a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine. Many Civil War carbine collectors lack this extremely rare example!
