Manufactured in St. Joseph, Missouri, this shotgun features two sets of barrels, a 28 gauge and 20 gauge. Each barrel set is 26 1/4" with a matte solid rib and a single brass bead sight. Each barrel set has jeweled ejectors with the 20 gauge chamber measuring at 3 1/4" and gauging at cylinder/ modified and the 28 gauge measuring at 3" with improved modified/ extra full bores. Both barrel sets have scroll engraving around the breech with gold inlays and two gold bands and a gold inlaid elephant on front barrel lugs of each set. The muzzle end has a small wedge of engraving with a gold wire-inlaid band. The satin coin finished box lock action is engraved with a broad leaf floral motif and a fleur-di-lis with matte background on the action fences. The left side features an engraving of a laying Springer Spaniel with a two-toned gold inlaid background. The right side features two gold inlaid Ruffed Grouse. On the bottom of the receiver is a gold-inlaid Seal of the President of the United States of America, along with "HATFIELD" at the front of the receiver in gold and engraved Roman numerals "XLI" (41) in a ribbon. A scripted "B" is gold inlaid on the trigger guard. The top of the action break lever is engraved with a gold inlaid eagle holding a shield, arrows and olive branch. Underneath the break lever is an engraving depicting a lady with a flag in the background. It has a single non-selective trigger and tang mounted safety, the gun has a straight grip maple stock with excellent fiddle-back figure and checkering on the tear-drop side panels and wrist. Stock is finished with a Pachmyr Old English recoil pad. Complete in a maroon leather fitted oak and leather case with double straps, leather corner protectors, brass hardware and wine-colored interior with a leather Hatfield label. The case features four covered compartments with brass snap caps, brass oiler and blank presentation plaque. The gun was built with the intention of presenting it to President George H.W. Bush as documented in a 1990 article on the Hatfield Rifle Company in "Inc. Magazine" (article included). The gun is also accompanied by the original letter sent to the consignor from Ted Hatfield of Hatfield Gun Co. which states that his company built the gun for President Bush in 1990. The gun was ordered by the president of a Fortune 500 Company, a personal friend and supporter of Bush. The letter states that there was an article written in a premier issue of Forbes FYI in the fall of 1990 (copy included). The man that ordered the gun was outraged and refused to pick the gun up. The letter further states that the company's Chief Engraver, Dennis Pitts, spent over 400 hours on the engraving. The letter goes on to tell about the 31 gold inlays and outlines special features. This extraordinary shotgun unfortunately was never presented to then President George H. W. Bush and was eventually sold to the public. This created a rare opportunity for us to be able to offer this extraordinary shotgun at our auction!
