Description:

Measuring in at 6 1/2" long, 6 3/4" tall and 3" wide, depicting a bugling caribou with a 2 1/2" wide 6 point rack. Natural meerschaum construction, with the antlers made from real white stag horn, connected to the main body with a pair of textured amber discs, and the rest of the head made from a single piece of meerschaum, which appears to be entirely unsmoked with a light edged color forming, strongest at the nose and along the underside and back. The underside of the head is contoured to fit the hand, with the orange amber stem measuring 5 1/2" long with a sterling silver band measuring 2/5" wide with a pair of small hallmarks reading "VS" and "935". With a custom fitted leather covered case, lined in purple velvet in the bottom and white silk in the top, the latter marked "FRANZ HIESS/ 7.KARNTNERSTRASSE.WEIN". Franz Hiess & Son are listed on the roster of the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 as turners of amber and ivory. Hiess is revered as the finest Meerschaum carvers of his time, Heiss' work compares favorably with other products of the era, and is highly sought after by collectors.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, showing only minor handling marks on the pipe overall. Some light wear is present on the case, concentrated along the edges, with the lining in very good condition. A top quality piece in unsmoked condition, which would make a prime addition to an advanced meerschaum collection.
