Description:

Manufactured at Colt's London factory in 1855. This example differs from most typical London Navy revolvers as it features a retailer address on top of the barrel that reads "MANTON & Co. CALCUTTA" in neat bold lettering indicating the revolver was sent from London to Calcutta, India, where it was retailed by Manton & Co. Demand for Colt's Model 1851 Navy revolver was high with English officers following the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and continued into the Crimean War. Features the large oval steel trigger guard, steel back strap, wide cylinder nipple cut-outs, bordered knurling on the hammer spur, and round head frame and trigger guard screws that are typical of Colt London Navy revolvers. London proof marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug and alternating on the cylinder. Full and partial matching visible serial numbers are marked on the loading lever, barrel, wedge, cylinder arbor pin, cylinder, frame, trigger guard and butt. Includes a period hardwood case for another model of revolver with a green felt lined fitted interior, a blank circular brass plaque on the lid and a period Manton & Co. Calcutta trade label on the interior of the lid. The case contains a key, some lead balls/bullets, some paper wrapped cartridges, a ball/bullet mold marked "36 P" on the side and "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter, a blued L-shaped combination tool, cleaning rod, Eley cap tin, oiler, and a bag shaped James Dixon & Sons Sheffield powder flask. A Colt factory letter, dated May 21, 1979, is also included that indicates Colt was unable to provide the shipping record for this London Navy revolver due to the records of these guns being "lost or destroyed years ago."

Rating Definition:

Fine as period retailer refurbished with blue finish on the barrel, vivid case colors on the frame, cylinder turned to mostly smooth gray and brown patina, blue finish on the trigger guard/grip straps, some scattered spotting mostly concentrated on the barrel, loading lever and grip straps, a patch of light pitting visible on the right of the barrel along with numerous small dings around the wedge, all of the cylinder safety pins, and sharp markings and cylinder scene. The grip is also fine and retains much of the original varnish finish and has scattered light scratches and a few nicks, tight fit, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with general mild age related wear, some loosened felt lined inserts, and a complete trade label on the interior of the lid.
