Description:

Both tunics are of green twill construction, with metal "U.S." and "winged propeller" badges on the high collars, an Aviator Badge on the left breast, a pair of silver bullion Service Chevrons on the left sleeve and a set of "American Eagle" buttons. 1) Uniform Tunic with breeches marked for WWI Chief of AEF Air Service and Director of Military Aeronautics Major General William L Kenly; an artillerist by training, Kenly was the first Air Service chief when military aviation was separated from Signal Corps control. The tunic is labeled for Maurice Rothschild & Co and the tailors A.B Kirschbaum & Co, with a pair of silver stars on each shoulder board, brass buttons, a silver and brass Junior Aviator Badge, and a set of four cloth ribbons on the left breast (including the Army Distinguished Service Medal and Bronze Star). The tailor label is hand-signed for William L. Kenly. The breeches are of similar construction. 2) 2nd Lieutenant's tunic, labeled for the New York Clothing Shop of Petersberg, Virginia, and the "House of Kuppenheimer" with plastic buttons, bullion Junior Aviator Badge, and a gold bullion Italian Aviator Badge on the right breast. One of the Kuppenheimer labels (inside the left interior pocket) is hand-signed for "Lt. William Frost". Lieutenant Frost is identified by provided records as an American aviator assigned to the Italian Corpo Aeronautico Militare, serving as a member of Squadriglie 10a, a training/combat unit outfitted with Caproni Ca.3 multi-engine bombers. His exact war record is unrecorded, though he is noted in the March 3, 1919 edition of Aerial Age Weekly as a recipient of the Italian War Cross at the rank of First Lieutenant. Fine overall, with some wear and small holes. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection.
